The weather was due to be more sunny at the weekend, and I discussed it with Paul, the need for a day trip. So on surfing the net I found a theme park in Seville (1hr 10mins from us) called Isla Magica www.islamagica.es. You can compare it to the likes of say Thorpe Park although slightly smaller. I find theme parks can be a small fortune especially for a family of 5, however luckily enough they were doing a Sunday promotion and we saved 40.00 euros - Brill!
So lastnight when the kids were in bed we booked it all - so it would be a surprise. Normally we tell them, but then you're bombarded with a million and questions and heaps of excitement that I don't think I would cope with! I'd rather save it til the day and then no questions.
Today we went to get a spanish mobile from the wonderful MariAngeles. Took some time as it had to be unlocked and get codes, etc. so I would come back later that night- hopefully without some of the children.
Paul had cooked the tea so I took Corrine with me later, and did the shopping for Sunday's trip out. We were in Orange for 2 hours - bless her - MariAngeles had to completely reconfigure the phone for me. Then I wanted to make sure all my emails, etc. were functioning, which took another 30 mins!
When we finally got home 9.00, the boys were already in bed, although not asleeep???

Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) here we come. I had some other chores to do today so would have to drive into town.
A slightly warmer day than yesterday, but still needed our jackets.
The ladies at the Ayuntamiento were very helpful, and within 30 mins, copied all necessary documents, completed the form. And had to come back next week to collect the Certificados.
Couldn't get through to Telefonica, on any of the public phones, lady at Movistar was as useful as a chocolate teapot - I later found out that she could (maybe she didn't know how to) organise an installation and the internet altogether! Hey ho - I won't tell her what she's supposed to know!
Back home for the kids to continue their study time and me to chill from Aston's bad behaviour, he's so intelligent but his attention span is frustrating. If he's not interested, even though he can do the work in 5 mins flat, and I've seen him do it. You can battle with him for ages. Racking our brains to find way to inspire Aston to focus ...................................Uuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Was glad that the sunshine had returned, and temperature back to the 27
degs we had got used to as normal.
Plan of action was to go back to our Ayuntamiento and collect our
Empardonamiento Certificados, starting the process of getting the kids into
school. Also visit internet cafe and see if I can call 1004 and get Telefonica
to order a telephone line so we can then order ADSL.
As it was nice again and we all needed the exercise from the last few nippy
days of staying in, we walked into La Carlota.
No luck at the internet cafe, the phones were not compatible to do
freephone numbers. So tried a public
phone, I got through understood the
first part of the script, not the middle (the most important part to speak to
an operator), but then understood the ending - that advised because you have
not entered the correct number the call will be discontinued and then the line
cut off! Oh well.
Off to Ayuntamiento, a little bit of the same story there got Certificados
but only for the children so they could go to school. If I could speak fluently I would have stood
my ground and requested eveything I came for, but at least the kids were sorted
so we left. We had other chores to sort
out.
Tried another public phonebox but again same situation. so talked to the lady at Movistar, as they
are part of Telefonica and I would be purchasing their internet and call
package from them in the end, but she didn't seem very knowledgeable or
helpful.
Well off to my favourite cheapy shop Bizarre and got Aston some marbles
(because I sometimes feel that I've lost mine!), to set up a reward strategy i.e. if the Happy
jar is full of marbles - because he has behaved - Aston is allowed Treats. If the Sad jar has even one marble - then no
treats. Every time he is naughty a
marble is TAKEN from the Happy Jar - get my drift. - Later today we tried it had within 30 minutes he lost a marble from the
Happy Jar - but within an hour later he had redeemed himself. So let's hope the improvement continues.
Anyway back to the rest of the day, it was hot and the kids were already moaning,
admittedly I had dragged them around a bit and we did walk into town. So thought we all deserved a refreshment.
Cool drinks and Patatas fritas with Salsa.
A little chill time, before visiting my friend MariAngeles at Orange to
see if I could use her phone to call Telefonica. During the chill, Eva the very friendly
English speaking lady from Movistar call centre, called to see how I was
getting on with calling Telefonica, and had a suggestion with getting mobile
wi-fi, but I said we already have that we need a fixed line - but she was very
helpful and would go away and see if she could get another contact number for
me.
At the Orange Shop........ 45
minutes later, still lost in translation - even with Google Translate - she was trying to sell me a fixed home phone
that you couldn't get internet on but you could hire it by going to the
Ayuntamiento each week????!!!!!
No wonder for a Town Hall it's busy, government have such a tight control
over everything the Ayuntamiento have more of the public through their doors!
Siesta had begun, no conclusion with MariAngeles although she asked me to
come back at five. Not sure why?
A gentle stroll home and picked some wild flowers to try and press. There
was a grey horse tethered two roads down, I had seen before whilst jogging,
next time we're passing if she is still there, will say hello. Found some wood suitable for kindling, long
spindly branches I made the kids drag back to the house - quite funny seeing
how they got through the gate.
Noticed some electricity cupboards on a house up the road, and may have
been mistaken about not being able to read the meters, and at the mercy of
Endesa - however couldn't match some of the numbering with the Landlord's
previous invoice. Will update that info
later.
Out of interest the electricity is still expensive. The Landlord's previous bill was Euro 124.00
for two months and we split the bill 50/50. However, he only used the house occasionally like a
holiday home. So that makes it quite
expensive bearing in mind we haven't used the air conditioning yet. But we're on the case now so I can check
consumption.
The metered water was expensive Euro100.00 for the month.
Corrine had decided to perform a little piece from the ballet Sugar Plum
Fairy. So Ethan organised the music, and
the magic began! In her little spanish
style swimming costume and tutu, dancing round trees, waving the end of a
skipping rope and cartwheeling over a footstool!
No wonder she finished all cheeks flushed.
A good day for all.
Macrame lesson tomorrow, and maybe some gardening - pruning the roses and
cutting the grass around the pool now that the weather looks like it has sorted
itself out.
Friday 10th May 2013
Again Paul did not have a good nights sleep, you see we have some birds nest between the air conditioning unit outside and the wall. And they were chirping and squaking away - I was fine but it really unsettled Paul's sleep.
So when he got up and the birds had flown out, he checked nothing was in the nest and blocked up the hole. In the hope for a good nights sleep.
the and I had a discussion last night on how to vary the learning, especially for Aston. Who doesn't like sitting in one room let alone one spot.
So we decided that Friday would be arts and crafts day. Music, paints/drawing, ICT, craft basically anything (within reason) that you wanted to do artywise.
Aston was painting the letters of his name, and then painting a rainbow over the top of the whole page - well at least it was a start! Corrine was painting over some wooden stencils she had and Ethan was remembering how to play the piano again (unfortunately we sold our beloved piano before we left - but had Grandma's trusty old electronic keyboard - something better than nothing).
These activities were a good idea, the kids really enjoyed their day, Ice lollies all round.
A good week for all - even Paul had a very productive week. Some family time at the weekend as a reward - and weather supposed to be good so, serious pool fun.
However, we weren't expecting

Sunday 12th May 2013
Glorious bright and already hot sunny day, so Karate will be on the grass under the trees.
Corrine backed out, no longer wants to do Karate with Sensei Daddy, because it's too hard. Basically with only three of us she has to do more, and Paul notices when she's not wanting to even try her best.
That's fine, we have always said they should only do it if they want to. Just because we do a particular sport doesn't mean they have to too. You have to follow your heart and do what you love, be it sport, work, or lifestyle.
It was a good session, Paul videos them now both to help us see what we are doing and where we need to improve, but also for some of his work too. He showed us how to do a forward roll, yes I know, I thought I knew how to do this properly until he instructed how to not let your head bear your weight. This would aid if you wanted to get out of a situation quickly. Then Kata work, bit tricky as I needed to cut the grass so kept getting my feet stuck on my turns. Good practice though.
Now pool time!!
Not for now though, I was just putting out some washing before preparing lunch when I heard a rather loud splat!
I looked around, just happened to look down beside the table and saw a baby bird, literally must have only hatched within the last couple of days. No feathers and eyes still shut. But as it's little heart was pounding so fast - I just had to try and help this little life survive. But in the back of my mind was this some sort of warning for Paul because he blocked up the hole ??
All the family involved - Ethan was Googling what to do when you find a baby bird. Corrine and Aston were trying to dig for tiny tiny worms, then chop them up as the birds beak was so tiny. Paul was helping me sort accommodation and items required. Conclusion we needed to get it to a Wildlife Sanctury - but even if we found one, it was the weekend, and I couldn't phone them because they wouldn't understand English. So we would have to try and do our best.
We found you could give them boiled egg yolk mixed with milk til very thin, I had already started to give the bird water through a childs medicine syringe and poor little thing was very thirsty. Paul had to open his beak as I was too scared I would hurt it trying to hold the syringe as well.
The bird would need feeding at least every hour, day and night. Within the next couple of hours, we didn't need to open it's beak. It opened it by itself chirping! What a lovely sight and sound to hear.
I was concerned the box we had was too big and asked Corrine to sacrifice her pretty box that her new sandals came in. She did, but not without a moan. So I reiterated that it could be a matter of life and death as the bird needs to keep warm. Anyway what we didn't have though was heat. Apart from the sun, so we put a papertowel over the top and put it in the sun and a little peace and quite.
Now time for lunch, but it was chicken! I didn't mention it to the kids but I just felt funny eating it. Seeing that little bird struggling for it's life. Now known as Gerald - I don't know why but that name just popped into my head..
Lunch over, now time for the pool. And to work off some more calories. Aaah it was great.
Ethan and Corrine showered themselves before dinner. But blue skies were no more - Gerald sadly passed away later that evening! I was quite upset inside. But at least he had a fight for survival and wasn't savagely eaten by another animal - that's what I tried to explain to Corrine who was mortified - a little for the bird - but I think mainly that her pretty shoe box served a purpose that failed! That's my thoughts anyway. I checked every few hours, but he had definitely left life.
A sad ending to the day, but

Tuesday 21st May 2013
Off to Ayuntamiento to collect the Empardonamiento Certificados, will drive as have to pop to Mercadona and
take out the rubbish.
We saw MariAngeles (yes another one.
Ana, Carmen, Eva and MariAngeles are very popular names). But there
seemed to be a problem at the main desk where you collect the
Certificados. After waiting and then
being asked to wait about 10 minutes, were then told the computers had all gone
down! O'h well, come back tomorrow then. Cherry on the cake
was outside the Ayuntamiento, Aston being extremely naughty that
I screeched at
the top of my voice, dragged him over to a bench, sat him down and told him
off, explaining I don't care who is watching or listening! Made him sit there until he was ready to
apologise for his behaviour.
I wonder if
Ebay.es allow kids at an Auction of 0.01!
That's how I felt!
Mercadona and home, very quick trip.
As the kids had been in for a while they could let some steam offf
playing outside.
Emailed Telefonic to see if there was anyway they could contact me to
organise a telephone installation.
Kids found another baby bird that was creeping along the ground chirping
for its mama.
Unfortunately, the little bird from yesterday had perished under a tree and was a feast for the ants.
Aston and Corrine painted outside whilst Ethan practised his new found love
for basketball. He was better at getting
it through the hoops after a little instruction from Paul.

Wednesday 15th May 2013
After breakfast taking the kids into town to check the postbox, obtain a Empardonamiento (just lets the townhall know you and your family are living in the area, and can get the right budget to pay for services). You also need this before you can get the children into school.
It was another lovely day, a little cloudy, so we decided to walk into town. Especially as we would most probably walk to school most days so we could time ourselves. The little dog across the street kept following us and getting in our way, so every time we stopped to not trip over it, it rolled on it's back for a tummy rub. So cute. Well he only followed us halfway to town and then disappeared.
Everywhere seemed unusually quite though, even more quite than siesta but it was only 11.15am.
We eventually got to the main street (Avenida Carlos III - named after King Charles the third who founded the town when people were moving out to get work further afield and would come back later in life) and all the shops were closed, even some of the cafe's. So we walked down street saying Hola to the occasional groups of retired gents sitting outside chatting and commenting on women and basically anything else, but mainly women. A common Spanish gents pastime.
We were just going to check to see if the post office was open, when a old chap we had briefly said Hola to earlier stopped and started talking. Very sweet man, I'd say in his late 70's even early 80's, and I think in his youth would have been quite Guapo (handsome), commented that he didn't think it possible as I didn't look like I'd had three children - Charm all the way! Well we passed the pleasantries for a few minutes and then did the usual kiss on each cheek to everyone and off we departed.
Took the kids zig zag through some of the residential streets to a little park, for ten minutes play before the walk back home. Ethan researched and found out that 14-15 May in La Carlota they celebrate a Saint San Isidra. But everyone meets and travels to a small village 7kms away, to a meeting point to celebrate.
Well didn't get the chores done but at least it was a bit of exercise - before PE tomorrow.
Aston played on the keyboard a little and then watched a Spanish film with Corrine whilst Ethan did some more research for me.
I took the time to write some letters and post messages to friends. I know we have the blog, but it's not the same, it's nice to hear news from others about what's happening in their lives.
Will go to the town tomorrow and try again.

Tuesday 14th May 2013
Up bright eyed and bushy tailed. Before the Landlord and Engineers turn up.
It was nice as Carmen, Luis (Landlord's) wife came. She's great - I always try and call her Nicole (our friend Marie's mum) because they are so much alike in many many wayss, but then I stop myself and say Carmen. We muddle through a conversation and she adores the kids.
Engineers gone, Luis and Paul went to La Carlota to change the electricity and water contracts to our names, as we were having a little difficulty doing it over the telephone. The main electricity supplier is Endesa, just like the banking - the utilities is ancient too. Spain has only just started allowing alternative utilities providers into the market. Whereas in the UK, the likes of Atlantic Electric and Gas (who we used), ENPower, EDF, etc. where scoping the consumer market some 10-15 years previous. Also there is no meter to read. You appear to be somewhat at the mercy of the electricity company on your consumption. Water however, well ours anyway is metered. So of course we can read that. But all utility companies will only supply you if you pay be Direct Debit. Another way of the government trying to control the finances.
Carmen was welcome to stay with us, so I got some snacks and the kids asked her to choose a DVD and we watched in Spanish. Aston had befriended Carmen, just like he does most ladies, he was in his element.
1 1/2 hours later all done, film finished, Paul and Luis returned all Contracts transferred. However, not much luck on the air conditioner - the engineers told Luis it needed a compressor. Again in the UK you could source one possibly second hand or find somebody to repair. Not in Espana. So poor Luis may have to sort some individual units instead - bless him, he is such a genuine, kind and helpful guy.
Well lunch ready and kids back to study time, they had the unscheduled break this morning - albeit the film was in Spanish.
Later in the afternoon I was incredibly tired that I fell asleep on the sofa. Kids had to make their own tea - supervised by Paul, and I still had another sleep. I think the gardening exerts the previous day and swimming and karate have all caught up with me. Body requires rest.

Monday 13th May 2013
The temperature outside felt a little cooler. So a spot of gardening ensues.
9.06am I was out there with my little Aston helper mowing the lawn - Paul had lowered the blades so I could get the grass spongier. The grass grows like a vine with grass shoots along the way, but the lower you cut it gets really thick. Also rain was due in the next couple of days and it would get into the soil easier.
There was also a Lime tree - the fruits look like limes and the blossom smells divine. Only about 16-20ft tall, but really needed some of the top branches cut as they were starting to overhang the roof. Not a nice tree to cut, it has thorns, ooh not like rose thorns - these needles are upto 2 inches long. And they hurt!
All in a hot sweaty day, lawn mowed, lime and fruit trees had hair cuts. Even the tennis court (with the help of Ethan and Aston) had a sweep and the climbers by the pool. My workout complete. Who needs a gym.
Shower, dinner and bed.

Paul's friends(the birds) attempted to get into the hole but failed and flew off. Paul slept like a babe. However, I felt somewhat guilty - and reminded Paul about the kids film Furry Vengence. Very funny you just gotta watch it.
A chilled day, kids were dog tired from all their studies, that Aston fell asleep on the sofa during Siesta time and we all forgot to go in the pool before we realised it was dinner time.
Short but sweet.

Thursday 9th May 2013
Sunny today, hope it is not too hot first thing as today is PE day!
Got the kids ready and out on the Tennis Court, champing at the bit wondering what they were going to do. Corrine insisted teachers need a whistle for PE - Not when there are only three children though.
Anyway a child in each corner and relay running until we had all done a circuit of the court. Although Aston decided that he'd do his own route. Then some balancing beanbag on the head whilst hopping on one leg following one of the court lines - well what did you expect - I'm trying to tire these kids out! Then some walking on hands and feet around obstacles - even I found that one difficult. Dribbling a football round the same obstacles, etc. I tried to do a variety of things to keep them interested - but Aston just wanted to kick the football anywhere, so I let him do his own thing as long as it was exercise.
Time for lunch I think - and seems they worked quite hard we could eat outside. Food shopping during Siesta - much less busy. Then kids would be ready to carry on study later.
Landlord sent an email saying he and his wife, Carmen, would be coming with an Engineer to repair the air conditioning next Tuesday.

Wednesday 8th May 2013
But cloudy but very warm, expected 30 degrees. So out with the washing as it will be dried in under a couple of hours.
Decided because my lie in yesterday completely disorganised my day, I would run and cycle this morning. Ethan asked if he could join me, so I accepted as long as he kept up. I was only doing ten minutes as the rest would be cycling and karate.
Temperature was great for a run and Ethan did keep up. Cycled round the court for 10 minutes followed by 1/2 of karate interspersed with dancing, we have the space so why not!
Right on time the kids were at the table books out ready to Study. Even Aston was a willing pupil. Which is good because then they would be quite and Paul wouldn't get disturbed so much.
Me, well, you know what? It was my turn to make up for all R and R time I never took. So bikini on, horsey book and towel tucked underneath my arm heading for the sunlounger.
A good day, well for me anyway.

Tuesday 7th May 2013
A glorious start to the day - because I had a lie in - for a change. Really tired today.
Kids were rampaging around the house agravating each other. Not listening to us again, whilst they are play fighting again. Let's just wait for the screaming and crying to commence .....
I was enjoying a nice late breakfast with Paul when Ethan bounded in with a stern face and rigid body language, snatched his water bottle off the kitchen table and stormed out, just before he reached the door Paul stopped and asked him to explain his attitude, through the mumbling and spluttering - Corrine and Aston had been fighting him. Anyway he just happened to turn around and there was blood dripping from his head!
Aston and Corrine had ganged up on Ethan which had first started as play fighting (which we know always ends in tears - but why listen to your parents - it's not like we know anything, is it??) and then hit him with part of Aston's construction kit (luckily plastic).
This was it Paul and I hit the room. Got them all in front of us and gave a good telling off. They had gone too far this time. So the work begins. Paul I felt that it was now time to give them some good old fashioned structure in their day.
Study at the kitchen table from 9-12 time for lunch and play. Then Study from 2 - 4pm including Aston.
It's was even written on a piece of paper and placed on the kitchen wall so that they would be reminded every day what they had to do.
Whilst I after baking two lots of bread and two batches of puff pastry decided it was time for a dip in the pool. Well not a dip, I hadn't had a swim yet.
The clouds had cleared after about lunchtime I pumped up the inflatable ring, and whilst the kids were banned from playing outside they watched from the hallway windows (as despite being told off earlier had misbehaved again) I waved to them. As a "look this is what you can do if you behave, but not today!"
The rest of the day went smoothly.

Monday 6th May 2013
A little cloudy, but by 10.30 beautiful.
Dragged the kids into La Carlota to post some cards, had a brief chat with my mate Carlos. Then shoe hunting for the princess, in fact for two pairs of shoes. This girl just keeps growing!
And treated myself to a new swimsuit and an inflatable armchair for the pool with it's own cup holder, for my servants to bring me Champagne................. ooooh no I've just woken up. Where was I? Oh yes treated myself to a new swimsuit, to Aston's dismay.
Back in time for lunch outside with Paul, and then siesta. Which I spent mainly stopping the kids from fighting, making sure Ethan doesn't flood their bathroom whilst showering on his own, and making lemon drizzle cupcakes! Oooh and a spot of updating blogger.
Siesta over, time to make tea - Rustled up a little Ratatouille. Packed the kids off to bed and then tried to Skype Grandma, connection was mostly good, then after 50mins kept dropping. It was nice to speak to her, as only spoke to Grandad last week as mum was at my Aunty Yvonnes - having some girls time out.
Instead cracked on and copied over all the text I'd typed previously and published on blogger.
Then catch up on some emails and finished by 10.47. Maybe a spot of Spanish TV? Followed by 7 minutes of ads. They even tell you how long the ads will be. They save the time on films especially by cutting the beginnings and hardly showing credits at the end of the films. Weird. It is also funny that some names they translate into Spanish, whilst others they give it a name they think suitable. For example there is a film called Stepford Wives - if you don't know the film it is about a group of men that have an electronic chip placed in their wives brain, which in turn makes them polite, dainty, wear cute very ladylike dresses, etc. etc. you know what I mean. But instead of changing it to Stepford Esposa's(Stepford Wives) they changed the name to Perfect Ladies.

Sunday 5th May 2013
The morning temperature was already fierce, especially on the tennis court. So karate was on the grass, in the shade. A good 1 ¾ session and I can see the improvements. Especially in Ethan’s Sparring I could feel them – especially when he knocked me one good and proper on my left jaw. Well done E!
Time for lunch and then after siesta, a dip in the pool. Kids love having the space to run and play.
A bit more tidying up and one last cupboard to put together and sorting in the kids rooms, and everything is almost finished – Just got a few more pictures to put up and all done.

Saturday 4th May 2013
A nice warm day, maybe a dip in the pool again.
Haven’t run for a few weeks, so went this morning. Didn’t hear so many dogs, maybe they’ve got used to us. Then a bit of exercise in the court, karate, yoga stretching and even a bit of salsa – singing, or trying to sing – as it’s all in Spanish! Aaah this is the life!
The washing has built up over the last few days, so best make the most of the sun.
Paul and I needed to tidy and move some things around in the carport area. We use this a like a garage space, but we noticed that although it faces the front of the house facing the street, most of Spanish actually use this as a dining area – espec ially at Siesta time. La Carlota and the surrounding villages still have a siesta from 2-5pm. Whereas some larger towns/cities now don’t to improve business.
Hard work done, checking all the tyres, brakes, etc. on the bikes was next. Then 20 laps round the court on the high gears to get the legs working.
I took Ethan to the supermarket whilst Paul and the kids had a swim.
The days just fly past.
Now we had the internet, I changed a few online account details and surfed to find a piano. We have just the right space for it and the acoustics are fab. I really miss not playing. We have a old keyboard that has loads of functions, but it just doesn’t feel or sound like a piano.
All emails done and it had already gone past midnight. Phew!

Now we had the internet, I changed a few online account details and surfed to find a piano and look for any Hippico (riding clubs) nearest La Carlota. I really miss riding so much, Ethan has noticed this and has made a little video and added some pictures of the horses that I have ridden, especially Woody the Warmblood (oooh that rhymes). I may just pop into Orange in La Carlota and have a word via Google with MariAngeles. She works for Orange and I had noticed she had some really nice horse themed bracelets, very stylish sort of like filigre and rings. I enquired and she advised that she sells them from her home. We started talking horses and then she said have one, a present from me to you. It is gorgeous and I wear it all the time. Looks fab on my golden sun kissed skin!!!!!! I know you're all spitting feathers at me now aren't you?!
I also miss playing the piano, as stopped our lessons back in July last year and the piano was one of the first things we sold. But now we have just the right space for it and the acoustics are fab. I really miss not playing. We have a old keyboard that has loads of functions, great for Cabaret and a smart velvet jacket with a cravat, but it just doesn’t feel or sound like a piano.

Friday 3rd May 2013
Not such an early start, but the sun shining again and the forecast is back to normal 28deg C. Excellent. Everyone back in their smart clothes, although there was some disagreement from Aston.
Got to the offices, took our ticket, 20 minutes later, 5 NIE’s in our possession. The lady was now a little more happier and helpful.
Now to the Bank. Gave Diego all our documents, asked for the account to be joint. 1/2hour later one Spanish Bank Account. But they don’t use chip and pin here. You have a creditcard shaped piece of card. With numbers down the left side and letters along the top, and when you log onto the internet it asks you for a number, for example Row 3, Column B and then you type this into the computer! I would have thought that Barclays Spain would still have the same processes as Barclays UK. But obviously not. And when I put some money in the Account he used a carbonised slip and stamped it and gave me a copy!
Mission accomplished, time for a picnic in the park and then back home, to relax, kids had been getting a little weary. However, they have been patient with all the going back and forths we have had to do in the last few weeks. It is really boring for them too.
A chill out and early night for all I think. Also my feet were killing me wearing high heels for two long hot days in a row. My poor bulging calf muscles.

Thursday 2nd May 2013
Bright and early, clothes ironed, all members dressed smart ready for business, even Ethan put on his school tie!
Packed lunch ready for a full on day, as we wanted to go to the bank first before the appointment, see what we needed as criteria, then at least we would have Ana, our Translator, with us for assistance.
At Barclays we had everything apart from some sort of Certificate of Residency, our Rental Contract wouldn’t be sufficient, well at least we knew. Anyway we met Ana outside and went in for our appointment. For some reason, even if you have a booked appointment you still have to get a ticket and wait in line. Well we went to desk 3, but the lady said we couldn’t see her because we were British we needed desk 7, but that wasn’t open til 12.00. We would have to take another ticket and they might be able to do it for us. However, Ana did her stuff spoke to the Security Guard and then spoke to the lady at desk 7 (same Mrs Happy from last time) and she said she would help. Forms processed, signed we went next door to the bank to pay, came back gave her the receipt and she said come back tomorrow at 12.00 and collect your NIE’s. Woop woop. Excellent.
The kids were enjoying Ana’s presence too, especially Aston as he spent most of his time holding her hand – little Prince Charming!
Now back to Diego at Barclays Bank and see if Ana can also use her charm on him. Basically, it worked! It wasn’t just being able to speak Spanish, she was persistent in reaching a positive conclusion for us. And it worked. Tomorrow Friday we would collect our NIE’s and then go to the bank with the NIE and open an Account.
We then went to Carrefour at La Sierra and popped in Orange, and found that we could get a dongle internet for Euro 29.99 per month instead of the 2.99 per day that we was paying. All in all, a fantastic day.
Tired and a long day, but very, very happy Adjayi’s.
Previously I had read on the internet from various sources that obtaining an NIE was a nightmare. And would take weeks and you would have to keep chasing you could not expect to be called when it was ready. The learning experience for us and advice to anyone else is, even if your Spanish is OK, get a Translator (especially one who thinks on the same wave length as you). It makes life so much easier, and at a reasonable cost per hour too.
She is going to help us improve our Spanish in addition to the work we are doing at home, as well as ask her friends where there are Salsa classes, so Paul and I can get back to it. However, we may have to do alternate lessons, so we can take turns looking after the kids.

May Day Bank Holiday in Spain today. Literally everything is shut, apart from Restaurants of course.
Weather was a little warmer so more pool work and a bit more gardening. There are some large Aloe Vera which have re-shooted and I found a baby palm growing out of the side of another tree. So decided to repot them to eventually be put in large stone pots on the terrace.
I always feel at home doing some gardening, also came across a little grey lizard which I disturbed when moving some rocks. Whilst we are talking about lizards, the Landlord told us that there is a lizard who lives on one side of the pool. It has a burrow (or whatever you call a lizard’s home is), now I haven’t seen it, but the hole is approximately 5-6 inches wide, but it's apparently harmless – so we have called him/her Sid. Yet wait an appearance.
Got on my mountain bike and had a quick blast round the tennis court before tea. Big day tomorrow we have to meet our Translator to go to our Appointments for our NIE (Spanish ID). And try to get a Bank Account at Barclays – as I know they do internet banking.
Spanish banks are at least 20 years behind the UK. You have to get a ticket (like at tesco’s deli) and wait your turn, and some banks still write out on a carbonised slip! Yes I know, it was like that when I was a kid.

Tuesday 30th April 2013
A slightly warmer day but you still needed a light jacket. But time to sort out a few more things like a P.O.Box address. Form was filled out, passports ready but I was going on my own with the kids as Paul was working – let’s hope the bureaucracy here doesn’t mean Paul has to go in person too.
Luckily the post office was empty and a nice chap called Carlos (C harles) was helping me. I didn’t have a Spanish Bank Account, so asked if I could pay for the year in cash Euros 115.00. Everything was OK until he said something and pointed to the address. He confirmed the form was OK, the money was OK, but I thought he was asking me to make a new number. Anyway the misunderstanding and confusion carried on for at least 15-20 minutes then he came from behind the counter and went to the boxes, opened one and pointed to the number. Basically the confusion was in my part! The box was number 9 - Nueve, but all along I thought he was saying Nuevo, which means new, I thought I needed to choose a new number! Duhh - You plonker Rodney!
So obviously I apologised for my misunderstanding and explained to him what I had done.
Anyway he was a nice chap, and I think because he saw that I was really trying hard to converse he in turn was helpful, and didn’t let the long queue that was building up behind me worry him, although I was very conscious of it and the huffing and foot shuffling that went with it – but his colleague came out to deal with them. Carlos gave me his full attention and time even showing me to the door, introducing himself and spending along time saying goodbye. Or maybe he was just making sure that I left????
Anyway, It was a good experience for me and I will feel relaxed going to post things, now I know my mate Charles will be on the case.
Now off to my wonderful China Bizarre to get a few bits n bobs, and back home to update the Blogger, and take a look at the pool. The cooler weather and wind has blown some leaves/seeds in the pool over the last few days – it’s amazing how much dirt it can accumulate. And for some reason, the Spanish do not use pool covers. God knows why? I think Paul and I may have to make up something, because I’d rather spend my time in the pool than cleaning it!
Monday 29th April 2013
A cloudy and very nippy day, and rained for most of the day til late afternoon and then the temperatures rose a little and the skies had patches of blue.
The grass and plants really needed it, so I’m not complaining – saves on the water bill as the garden has a sprinkler system and it’s on a water meter.
We took the indoors time to sort out the computers and get rid of a lot of stuff we have acquired over the years.
But most importantly backup the main computer with all of our family pics since the kids were little. Didn’t have time before we left the UK so was a relief to see not only the computer still worked but that everything was still there! Phew, lucky!

Wednesday 24th - Sunday 28th 2013
Everyone, including myself, excited at having our things arrive.
The team were ready. Ethan had the list ready to tick, when the items came off the lorry. Paul was going to help with any large items. I was advising where things should go. And Aston and Corrine just needed to stay out of the way!
The guys arrived on time and were helpful, they were happy to take everything in, even the heavy stuff upstairs to the 4th Bedroom / Paul’s Office. It all went very smoothly.
Now to unpack the boxes and shift some furniture around.
Everyone was even more happier than we were before, if that is at all possible.
It took a few days to sort things out. Poor Aston – every time he opened a box, he wanted to play with everything it in. Being reunited with his things! It was like Christmas for him he didn’t know what to play with first. Bless. At least it took his mind off his preschool friends.
I've noticed he's been talking about them a lot more these last few days.
I was still surprised at the amount of clothes that we had. But guess what we found. Our roller blades that Paul and I had bought in 2001 in the US. And hadn’t used them for almost ten years.
Now we have a tennis court, there is no excuse. Don’t worry we have got knee, elbow and wrist pads. So falling down won’t be so painful, especially as I will have to dodge the kids on their bikes and go karts!
I think it will be a slow start, no turns – but plenty of “get out of the way kids, else I’ll run you over, I can’t steer yet!”
And our bikes too, they haven’t been ridden for a long time either. Can’t wait........

Monday 22nd – Tuesday 23rd April 2013
Sunny again, a busy week this week. Expecting the package to arrive and Grandma would text throughout the day tracking were the package was.
Was supposed to arrive Monday afternoon, but was still in transit from Barcelona.
Tuesday everything started to happen, the courier had reached Cordoba at 9.45am the kids were champing at the bit every time a car passed or slowed down near the driveway.
The transport guys confirmed the delivery time for our belongings tomorrow, so it seems everything was going well.
Early afternoon a van stopped out the house, met by three kids at the gate jumping up and down screaming – He must have felt like Father Christmas!
Once I got the kids to be quiet for a bit, we had dinner and then opened the box, full of goodies for Corrine’s birthday and one or two little surprises for the boys. Then on the phone to Grandma to let her know it had arrived safely and, of course, say thank you.
An early night now, because the transport guys were due to arrive about 9.30am. And we had a task on hand as everything had to be put in the right place but also ticked off the list, so we know everything arrived.

Sunday 21st April 2013
A cloudier day and we had some rain.
Karate was on the terrace and Paul put up the awnings so we had more dry space. It was from one extreme to the other last week we had shorts and T-shirt, and hats for karate with the sun blazing down on us. Today I was wearing a vest, T-shirt, fleece, body warmer and one of my woolly hats!
Because we had some wind and rain, the bottom of the pool needed cleaning. Later this afternoon Paul decided that he was going to get in and check, even though the Ph was OK, but that it felt OK on his skin and eyes didn’t sting – like it can in some pools.
Well it was cold, and I had already said there’s no chance of me getting in! So whilst stopping my self from cracking up with laughter I advised Paul to warm himself up first with a few karate exercises. But I couldn’t resist, the laughter just blurted out – it was cold, and I know how Paul doesn’t like the cold either. “Just get in” I shouted. “You will be alright once you get going”. It was so hard trying to stop the laughter.
And yes he did scream like a girl, many times. And like a devoted wife, I still encouraged him on! "Move around a bit more, you big Jessie!" As of course I would, I wasn’t in there – Best entertainment I’ve seen for a long time!
Anyway conclusion was, albeit freezing – the pool was OK and ready for use.
Tuesday 16th – Saturday 20th April 2013
A sunny days in the garden, Paul was working for the most and popping back and forth to the internet cafe, so kids could just chill out. As well as they were eagerly awaiting the Courier package from Grandma, although they knew Grandma hadn’t sent it yet, they were wondering what would be inside?.
Saturday I decided to go for a run round the block. Followed by and entourage of barking dogs as I passed each house. A lot of people in this area have guard dogs – don’t know why, because it is so quite and peaceful. Anyway, I don’t think they are used to seeing people running past them, but they soon will as Paul runs as well. But the funny thing is in the evening, not only do you get birdsong. But the dogs all have a chat – it’s funny – it’s barking, but not barking – you can hear the difference, they are all talking to each other talking about……. I don’t know …… Doggy stuff.
So it was a week of sorting out where things would go as our belongings would be arriving next week. And we were also spending time trying to get the pool water at the right Ph to swim in.

Monday 15th April 2013
We decided to visit the Town Hall in Cordoba (to confirm that we had gone to the right place) It was a really beautiful building built around some ruins, you can see the ruins from inside they are part of the building itself. It is also in the Historical part of Cordoba which is just as lovely as the modern areas, you just have to see it for yourself really.
Well the nice lady in the Information confirmed we had to go to Subdelegacion de Gobierno, oh well we tried, so off we went. Back to the car for a snack and to get to the office for 11.55. It was 11.59 and I was just going to get a ticket, when I noticed a sign with a word Citar, I only recognised this word as I had got a list of questions translated ready for her ladyship. And it mean’t appointment. So I stood at the wall using my mobile network, tapping like the clappers to translate the sign. You’ve guessed it we needed an appointment! A rule had been put in place 1st December 2013 that all initial Applications are by appointment only, and one appointment per application. It gave a website address and a telephone number too. So no need to get a ticket then.
Well at least we now know what’s needed. We decided to get Ethan some more Passport photo’s and Mercadona on the way home. After the food shop Siesta was over so went to the internet cafe to try the website to make the appointment. The link didn’t work, not recognised. Great. However, I had noted a similar website address on the sign and took that one down, eventually found the appointments area and typed away. 1 hour later - 5 appointments booked – although not til 2nd May. Also translator booked for a couple of hours to come with us too.
Don’t let frustrating times get you down and distract you further, just think of what you want the end result to be then ask yourself. HOW AM I GOING TO GET IT!?
Tired, but a very positive day. Nighty night.

Sunday 14th April 2013
I know it’s a bit boring but, SUNSHINE AGAIN! And best of all our baby girl’s 7th Birthday. The tension has been building up for days, even from Aston and Ethan!
We didn’t have internet so it was going to have to be a quick call to Grandma’s, but we decided to have lunch a local Tapas. We have made a family rule that we have to try every Tapas in La Carlota, not in the same day though. Well the kids definitely were up for that challenge.
We arrived at Meson in the main street, with tables outside under a gazebo for SUN protection….(sorry).
Fish seemed to be the fashion of the day so decided with all the other veggie dishes to have a pescados fritos. Fried fish plata – but it was seafood as well. Baby octopus, squid rings, squid tentacles, calamari, white fish and something else in a conical shape. A healthy meal followed by a big slab of triple chocolate tart. And it also seems to be a custom in many of the tapas bars where you have a full meal to serve you with a syrup type of liqueur – and an apple non alcoholic one for the kids, which is delicious. The one I tried was a Speciality from another town in Cordoba Province called Mollina, bit strong for me though, but Aston helped himself to a sip just before we caught him – that boy’s cunning sometimes!
A good time was had by all, although there was a little remorse from Corrine, she missed the normal intoxication of pressies from Grandma and Grandpa. And not having her friends around her too, but we reminded her that it’s not all about presents, but Grandma is sending a courier to us!! I hope we have the room!
Early night, off to Cordoba in the morning, armed and definitely determined for a positive outcome.

Friday 12th April 2013
The night before, decided to get up early and go to Cordoba to see where we can apply for our NIE. It is different in every Province, but the options are National Police Station, Foreigners Office or Town Hall.
Well we knew where the National Police Station was – No No not for that reason. It was near where we park for 1.10 Euro/day. Well a nice Guard on the steps directed us to Subdelegacion de Gobierno, a couple of minutes walk from there.
We went in a briefly explained to the Guard in the Reception and he gave us a ticket and pointed to the waiting room. Well it didn’t look that busy and the numbers were moving fast, in fact we were only in there 10 minutes. Meanwhile I had received a call from Clare at Advance Moves saying that there was a bit of a problem, I had been quoted for and signed documents to remove 75cubic feet, however, the storage was more. And they didn’t have a big enough van. I said the storage is 75 square feet and roughly 6 foot high. Ooops, my mis calculation error was now going to cost me an extra £1,200. Well we decided that as they had already taken some of the things, if they put them back it would cost me more without actually removing anything, so decided, just go for it. And our things will be here soon.
Anyway back to the waiting room - our number came up and we went to Mesa 3 (desk 3) as indicated. I had already translated via my best friend Google what I wanted to say. But the woman just stared at me with a clueless expression on her face, spoke to her colleague on Mesa 2. She asked for my Passport and said we needed Mesa 7 or 8. So off we went round the corner to desks 7 and 8, but the Guard stopped us and pointed to a sign. Which said they are open from 12 – 13.30 but it was only 11.15. So we went back to the car for snacks a refuelling.
12.10 we went back the Guard gave us another ticket, once again we were only waiting a short time. Our number came up, Mesa 7. But you can always tell when something isn’t going to go your way when the person at the desk has a face like a wet weekend, and once she see’s you rolls her eyes (with an expression of what the hell do they want now? Don’t you lot know it’s Friday?). Well I wasn’t going to let that stop me, she spoke no English at all (which I thought was weird for a Foreigners Office), or maybe didn’t want to! She didn’t understand a word I said, garbbled something to her mate next door and in a dismissive tone said something which we took to mean, when you have someone who can translate in person then I can help you. With a nice friendly smile on our face, I said in Spanish thank you very much for your help, good bye!
Please just let me say this, the miserable Senora at Mesa 7 was not a typical Spanish Civil Servant, both the National Police, the Town Hall and another Government office we went into by accident, although they too didn’t speak a word of English were most friendly and helpful too. She just obviously wasn’t quite feeling herself that day!
This lady had, how the expression goes – got my goat (no offence to goats intended) and I was going to do whatever we need to do to get our NIE! So off home for a snack and to the internet cafe, to a website that I found when we were in the UK. And downloaded a printed off the forms in duplicate that we needed, took more copies of our passports. We also spoke to Ana the lady who had just set up a Language school to see if she could translate at the office with us, but she was busy and put us in touch with a Language University in Cordoba, who may be able to help.
The University was helpful they said they thought you had to make appointments now as this had happened to a couple of their students.
So my best friend Google helped me translate a list of questions, so no matter what the confusion maybe, if I handed over one of their Applications the penny would drop!
